Say hello to Lett-Tak Wood

Lett-Tak Systems is introducing a new wood-based roofing element, developed in collaboration with Mätse. This roofing element boasts an extremely low CO₂ footprint and has received European Technical Approval (ETA).

Addressing environmental challenges

Globally, the construction sector is responsible for 40 % of all CO2 emissions, 40 % of energy consumption, and 40 % of waste. We aim to make a difference. In the EU’s circular economy action plan, it is estimated that approximately 80 % of a product’s environmental impact throughout its lifecycle is determined by its design. With the new roofing element, Lett-Tak Wood, we aim to make eco-friendly construction more accessible.

Significant reduction in CO₂ footprint

The new roofing element yields approximately 24 kg CO₂eq/m². This is considered nearly one-third of the footprint of solid wood decking, one-fourth of the footprint of steel profiles, and one-fifth of the footprint of hollow core concrete.

Johan Aas at Lett-Tak

“We are very conscious of the environment and are ISO 14001 certified,” Johan Aas, CEO of Lett-Tak Systems AS, explains.

“We choose suppliers with environmental ambitions as high as ours and exclusively use sustainably produced subcomponents in our production.”

Received European technical approval

Lett-Tak Systems has been working on the development of Lett-Tak Wood for over 2 years. “We adhere to a culture where excellence is a guiding principle in everything we undertake. This means that development and testing take time, but it is also quality-assured in every way,” Aas says with a smile.

The company has its own specialists with a Ph.D. in statics and building physics to perform static calculations and other necessary analyses. To deliver the roofing element with the desired static properties, plates and beams in the wood material Kerto® LVL are used. This is laminated veneer lumber with very high strength and good stiffness properties. “The wood material we use is stronger than a timber log, allowing us to deliver the roofing element in long spans,” Aas clarifies.

“We have also conducted full-scale tests of the elements and obtained European Technical Approval (ETA) through the Finnish testing institute Eurofins. The certification is conducted in a foreign institute with the international potential we see in the product.”

Documented long-term effects in different temperature and climate zones

The roofing element must withstand the stresses, temperatures, and moisture that the Nordic climate presents.

“We have conducted numerous climate simulations to analyze and document how moisture and temperature affect the material properties over time and in different temperature and climate zones,” Aas explains.

Dismantlable, reusable, recyclable, and energy-efficient

The new roofing element can be dismantled, reassembled, and is nearly 100 % recyclable. “Lett-Tak Wood is designed to outlast the building and can be reused as a complete roofing element,” Aas says. He adds that the roofing element also contributes to low energy consumption due to excellent insulation. “It is also possible to choose wood fiber insulation for further optimization of the CO₂ footprint.”
